Description
Handcrafted in Java from old-growth solid teak, this piece takes its name from the Dutch colonial term kubiek—an intentional nod to its near-equal cubic volume and monolithic, grounded massing. Reflecting the Streamline Moderne aesthetic that reshaped late colonial interiors across Java, the cabinet trades earlier ornament for clean, aerodynamic lines, anchored by a thick overhanging top finished with softly radiused corners.
The facade breaks symmetry with a clever piece of Javanese cabinetry engineering. While the left door remains a classic flat panel, the right door is built with an articulated bi-fold return that wraps neatly around the corner frame, swinging fully clear of the case to reveal the interior. Both doors and drawers are fitted with faceted emerald glass knobs, introducing a deep jewel-toned accent that catches the light against the warm grain of the aged teak.
Behind the doors, the interior is divided into thoughtful zones for modern living: open, deep shelving on the left ready for a drinks collection, decanters, or books, alongside a column of three stacked teak drawers and a vertical niche designed for table linens, bar accessories, and personal treasures. Resting on an inset plinth base, the cabinet delivers quiet luxury and tactile pre-war character, serving as an understated yet captivating statement piece beside a sofa, in an entryway, or styled as a compact dry bar.
