Gramophone Cabinet

In 1920s colonial Java, an acoustic gramophone was not an everyday household appliance; it was an extraordinary display of wealth found almost exclusively in sprawling plantation estates, private merchant villas, and colonial residences. Preserved in excellent condition, this piece has been meticulously restored while retaining its original character and patina.  

Deeply carved into the underside of the lid is the cursive mark of Parla—a high-end gramophone marque registered in Batavia (modern-day Jakarta). Rather than settling for factory-built European wood cases, prominent villa owners commissioned master Javanese carpenters to build bespoke floor-standing cabinets, entirely by hand from solid, seasoned old-growth teak.  

The stepped, pagoda-style lid lifts open on an authentic brass stay to reveal the former turntable well, offering a deep recess that converts seamlessly into a private spirits station, cocktail mixing bay, or elevated plant display. Below, the front door pairs warm teak joinery with two panes of embossed emerald patterned glass, accented by an authentic brass ring-pull and period key escutcheon.  

The case is elevated on tall, sweeping cabriole legs linked by a contoured apron—a refined Dutch Colonial Queen Anne silhouette that gives the cabinet an upright, sculptural presence. Scaled to a compact footprint, this piece brings verified aristocratic provenance and century-old teak character into modern living rooms and salon corners.
