Description
Defined by a bold architectural frame and striking negative space, this 1930s armchair is a masterwork of colonial Java’s Dutch Indies Art Deco movement.
The chair’s profile is anchored by broad, cut-out timber flanks carved from solid Indonesian teak. Rather than relying on standard vertical legs, the lower frame forms a flat, bridged arch that grounds the base with grounded visual weight. Suspended above it, a deep U-shaped timber cradle wraps around the side, flanked by twin vertical slats that climb upward to lock into a long, flat arm paddle. The layered grid creates an open, lattice-like structure that keeps the heavy timber looking graphic and structural rather than dense.
Freshly reupholstered in a saturated peacock-teal PU leather, the smooth, tailored back and seat provide a vibrant chromatic contrast against the warm, golden honey tones of the seasoned wood. With its generous pitch, upright back, and broad armrests, it pairs undeniable presence with deep sitting comfort—an authentic collector’s piece equally suited as a standalone accent or paired in a statement seating arrangement.
