Description

Conceived around a rare, preserved set of authentic late 20th-century stained glass panels, this three-leaf folding screen functions as both a freestanding spatial divider and an illuminated art installation. The rare three original glass panels—sourced intact with their period lead cames and solder joints—have been custom-mounted into a clean, newly built frame handcrafted from solid aged Indonesian teak.

The panoramic visual narrative spans all three panels in an unbroken composition grounded in classical symbolism:

The Birds of Paradise (Cenderawasih): At its center, a pair of swooping birds dive and interlock in dynamic mid-flight, their amber plumage sweeping outward into the flanking leaves. Long revered across the Indonesian archipelago as celestial birds of grace and high nobility, their mirrored, diving flight paths form a continuous loop that traditionally signifies harmony, courtship, and balanced partnership.

Lotus Blossoms & Bulrushes (Teratai): Emerging on slender stems from the river currents, the lotus is depicted in continuous stages of life—from tight, pointed buds to mature flowering heads. A revered motif across regional Hindu-Buddhist and Javanese traditions, it stands as an enduring emblem of resilience, purity, and steady renewal.

Flowing Water & Reeds: The sweeping horizontal leadlines anchoring the lower third evoke calm river beds and marshlands, traditional symbols for cooling energy and uninterrupted abundance entering a home.

The tactile and collectable value lies in the glass selection. Rather than flat colored glass, the panels feature original pressed patterned glass—most visibly the historic floral Begonia and stippled cross-hatch panes used across the water, lotus petals, and foliage. Backlit by daylight or interior lamps, these relief textures refract light at varying angles, projecting glowing, jewel-toned color across the room.

Framed in dense, honey-toned aged teak with integrated notched bracket feet, the screen stands firmly without visual clutter, allowing the rare vintage glasswork to anchor an entryway, diffuse direct sunlight, or zone an open living space.
