Description
The Art Nouveau Glass Cabinet is a direct translation of the Dutch Nieuwe Kunst movement, executed in the Dutch East Indies during the early 20th century. The defining feature is the continuous whiplash fretwork that sweeps across the glazed doors, dividing the glass into asymmetric, teardrop-like panes. This organic, botanical line-work transforms the doors from simple transparent barriers into an intricate graphic focal point, capturing the essence of European Art Nouveau applied to tropical timber.
The upper architecture of the cabinet introduces a complex, tiered gallery. A central mirror is framed by sweeping, open brackets and capped with a geometric crown inset with emerald green textured glass, creating a layered play of light above the primary display volume. Below, the solid teak structure transitions to the floor via gently splayed legs and an open slatted lower shelf, providing a structural break that prevents the tall cabinet from appearing visually heavy.
Functioning as a high-impact display vessel, the vitrine offers a highly stylized frame for curated ceramics, books, or glassware. It serves as a commanding architectural element in a modern interior, representing a specific era of Indo-European design synthesis.
