Description
This Rosewood Sideboard combines a clean midcentury outline with exceptionally rare material provenance.
While the vast majority of European mid-century rosewood furniture relied on thin surface veneers laid over composite cores, this piece is built entirely from massive, solid planks of exquisite rosewood. Because old-growth rosewood takes decades longer than teak to develop dense, deeply variegated heartwood, wide, solid boards of this scale are extraordinarily scarce today. The timber displays a striking, high-contrast grain—deep chocolate marbling, charcoal veins, and warm amber undertones moving across the continuous top surface and interior bays.
The case is divided by a central vertical stile into two balanced display sections, each fitted with a fixed mid-height shelf to house books, ceramics, or media components.
The base presents a deliberate meeting of East and West: rather than standard Scandinavian tapered legs, the case is elevated on four turned baluster legs with rounded bulb feet and shaped apron brackets. Likely a conscious choice by the client who originally commissioned the piece, this structural foundation pairs traditional Javanese lathe-work with the streamlined geometry of post-war modernism.
