Description
A standout graphical addition to any room - the Floorish The Majesty, 果王 Rug, designed by Studio Ensemble, is a playful optical illusion as well as tribute to the king of fruits: the durian. See it from a certain angle and watch the 3D effect on the thorn motif!
From close-range, the Floorish The Majesty, 果王 Rug is a complex and graphic-laden interplay of pixels; from afar, the domineering and prickly fruit is revealed. Distance both creates and subverts the illusion. The only certainty is the uncertainty wrought by optical illusion, the only consistency is the playful pun on the Chinese language names of the chosen fruit, an element that is integral to the design concept.
果王, pronounced 'guo wang', is a pun on a similar pronunciation for the Chinese characters for 'king' - resolving into a fitting and royal title of The Majesty. The dark tones of the Floorish The Majesty, 果王 Rug also allude to the reigning Blackthorn durian.
Look closely and you'll also be able to see intricately-printed mini illustrations of the fruit hidden within the mosaic of colours and design elements - inspired by 'stuck pixels' on a screen.

About the Fruitfool series by Studio Ensemble
From afar, a rug looks like an artistic painting that one can admire. Up-close, it creates an intimacy with touch and intricate visual details.
With this is mind, Studio Ensemble created Fruitfool, which aims to fool the eyes of the observer by displaying the full visual seen from afar, and a mosaic of subtle abstract and intricate patterns up-close. Designers Junyao Lin and April Chen wanted to introduce an element of fun steeped in Singapore’s customs with the auspicious pineapple, majestic durian and mesmerizing watermelon.
A rug is usually created by knots. Studio Ensemble has translated knots into pixels and combined them to form different shades, which come together to form an abstract visual of fruit's texture. Enjoying the therapeutic process of drawing with pixels, the designers have unconsciously created more than 50 patterns, hoping to mesmerize the observer with the countless patterns combined.
