Description

Step back in time with this remarkable Javanese Gebyok, a piece of architectural history dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. Crafted from solid, old teak wood (Jati), this is not merely a divider but a section of the intricately carved wooden partition traditionally used as a main doorframe or separating walls in a noble Javanese Joglo house.

Masterful Ukiran and Symbolism
This divider showcases the masterful Ukiran (carvings) characteristic of Central Java. The deep, prominent carvings create a strong sense of high relief, depth, and shadow.

The motifs are rich with historical and spiritual meaning:

Foliate Scrollwork (Lung-lungan): The primary swirling vines on the top arch symbolize the Tree of Life (Pohon Hayat), representing life, fertility, prosperity, and continuous growth.

Geometric Patterns: The interlocking designs on the side panels signify order, harmony, and cosmic balance, reflecting the syncretic influence of Hindu-Buddhist and Islamic art traditions.

Authentic Patina and Heritage
Measuring an impressive 231cm in length and 166cm in height, the piece commands attention with its grand presence. The original decades-old polychrome finish—a custom popular during this period—has gracefully faded to a beautiful patina of deep green and oxidized gold, adding to its authentic charm. Its composition of dense, old teak further supports its late 1800s to early 1900s dating.

Historically, the square opening in the center would have been draped with traditional ikat fabrics to create a privacy screen. Today, this unique piece can be seamlessly integrated into modern homes as a powerful standalone conversation piece. Consider converting it into a striking headboard or a large mirror to preserve its rich history while introducing a touch of exotic elegance and masterful Javanese artistry into your living space.
