Description
The archetypal Batavia Chair originated during the Dutch Colonial era, reflecting a unique blend of European and local design influences that emerged in Batavia, now Jakarta, Indonesia. As Dutch settlers established their presence in the region, they sought to create furniture that combined local craftsmanship with the ornate aesthetics from Europe, resulting in timeless pieces that were both practical and artistically significant.
This original Batavia Chair, handmade from solid old teak and dating from the early 1900s to 1920s, features a rounded backrest profile that gently slopes into the armrests. The elegant curved accents throughout the frame highlight its organic design, with an organic plant bulb motif that aligns with Art Nouveau influences, celebrating natural forms and fluid lines.
The chair stands on four legs—two cabriole front legs and two gracefully curved back legs—adding to its sophisticated silhouette and neo-Classical design influence. It has been reupholstered in an elegant blue and white seat cushion, making it a perfect fit for modern homes while retaining its vintage charm.
